  5. He was army Chief of Staff in World War II, secretary of state 1947-49, and secretary of defence Sept 1950-Sept 1951. He foresaw the inevitability of US involvement in the war and prepared the army well for it. He initiated the Marshall Plan 1947 and received the Nobel Peace Prize 1953.
